One of the many amazing houses visible on our charters is "Pretty Penny", an Italianate house in Nyack on North Broadway.
This house has seen many famous people, and was owned by the "First Lady of American Theater" Helen Hayes, for 61 years. It was later purchased and renovated by Rosie O'Donnell.
In its time, Pretty Penny has entertained #KatharineHepburn, #ColePorter, #RonaldReagan, #MarilynMonroe, Rosalind Russell, Ed Sullivan, Noel Coward, John Steinbeck, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and the famous couple Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh
#RussellCrowe rented the house for six months while filming "American Gangster" in 2006
#EdwardHopper, who lived down the street on Broadway, was commissioned by Helen Hayes in 1939 to paint the house. Hopper didn't like painting on commission, but times were tough. In 1964, Hayes donated the painting to the Smith College Museum of Art, which had awarded Hayes an honorary degree in 1940.
